出会い
私は1963年に、群馬県高崎市で野菜農家を営む両親のもとに生まれました。 大学を卒業後、アメリカ・コロラド州にあるタガワグリーンハウスで2年間、園芸の運営と管理に関する研修を受けました。
I was born in 1963. My parents were working on vegetable farming north of Tokyo.
After graduating from university, I joined a training course on the horticulture operation and management at Tagawa Green Houses in Colorado in the United States for two years.

タガワグリーンハウスでの2年間の研修を通し、栽培管理や経営に関する基本技術やノウハウなど多くのことを学びました。
そしてこの経験と知識をもとに日本でのビジネスが始まりました。それは今でも私のスキルの核となっています。
I learned about many things - basic techniques and know-how for greenhouse operation and horticulture-business management through the two-year training at Tagawa Green House, and my bedding plant business in Japan started with this experience and knowledge.
They are still the core of my own skills even today.

帰国
私が日本に戻って事業を始めたのは、80年代の後半頃。
当時は国内の花壇苗業界が「ガーデニングブーム」となり「園芸」が新しい趣味として定着していました。これが事業拡大の大きなチャンスになったと言えます。私は、小売店を訪ねて交渉を重ね、販売店舗との連携を年々深めていきました。
今もなお、共に発展していく関係を築いています。
Just after starting my business in Japan, around the late 80s,“a gardening boom” happened in Japan’s bedding plant industry. Gardening and enjoying bedding plants in a personal garden became a new hobby in Japan.
This boom was an opportunity to help me expand my operation scale. In the boosting mood by myself I knocked on the doors of retail stores and negotiated with them. I tried to work together with those stores andwe made the relationship stronger year afteryear.
Of course, I am working with them inmutually beneficial relationships even now.
One day

一生懸命に仕事をこなしていたある日。
とてもユニークなパンジーを見つけました。その花びらが波打っているような形に不思議な魅力を感じて、自分でパンジーを作りたい！と思うようになりました。
これ以来、時間を見つけてパンジーの選抜を行いました。
One day, in my greenhouse I found a pansy plant with a very unique flower–it looked a little like it had ruffled petals. That “funny” form was quite enough to stimulate my curiosity. At that time, I began to feel strongly that I wanted to create my own pansies. After that, whenever I found time to spare or even by working over time, I continued to select those ruffled pansies every year for many years.
Breeding

パンジーを研究していくと、温度が「私の求めるフリル」に影響することがわかりました。そして涼しい環境だと花びらのカールを促進させ、花全体を丸くすることにも気づきました。また少しずつですが、色のバリエーションも増やしていきました。
こうして限られた、けれど素晴らしい時間と共にフリルの特性や色のコントラスト、そして全体のバランスを理想に近づけていきました。
In my private research for “my special frilled” pansy, I learned that cool temperatures had a positive affect on the amount of the frills. And, I came to realize that the cool conditions allowed petals to curl more and the flowers to become rounder. I also tried to expand color variation little by little. Therefore, I used my limited extra-time to manipulate the balance between my ideal frilled characteristics, color contrast and the round shape.
Finally
ついに
10年にわたる育種の末、ついに自分が追い求めてきたパンジーが完成しました。その魅力的な色・フリル・形から、「ドラキュラ」と名付けました。そして私は、パンジーだけでなくビオラに関しても、次々と種類を生み出すことに成功しました。
After spending a decade on this, I finally created an original pansy with all the attractive characteristics.
I named it “Dracula”. And I succeeded to breed many kinds of not only pansies but also violas.

現在

現在は、春にペチュニア、カリブラコア、ビンカなど30種類以上の花苗を栽培し、秋にはパンジーとビオラの販売に力を入れています。
そして2025年には、パンジーとビオラの種をアメリカ市場で販売するという新たな挑戦が始まりました。
「ドラキュラ」は北米で「トワイライト・コレクション」という名前で流通しています。
Now, growing over 30 high quality bedding crops, including petunias, calibrachoas, vincas... for the spring season, while focusing more on pansies and violas for the autumn market.
In 2025, a new challenge came up to finally sell my pansy and viola seeds in the US market. 'Dracula' is distributed under the name of “Twilight Collection” in North America.

Now there are a lot of fans who enthusiastically support my pansies in not only Japan but also the US. I am feeling closer to my dream step by step through seeing many images of or messages about the Dracula pansy on social media.

たくさんのガーデナーの心を動かしたいと思っています。
In the future, we would like to expand sales to Europe and around the world. We hope to inspire the hearts of many gardeners.
